2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games
Lexington, Kentucky
September 25 - October 10, 2010The FEI World Equestrian Games are the major international championships for equestrianism, considered by many horsemen to be more important than the Olympics, and administered by the Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI). The games have been held every four years, half way between each pair of consecutive Summer Olympic Games, since 1990. Prior to that year, all ten of the FEI's individual disciplines held separate championships, usually in separate countries.
The WEG have gradually expanded to include eight of the FEI's ten disciplines: combined driving, dressage, endurance riding, eventing, paraequestrianism, reining, show jumping, and vaulting.
The World Equestrian Games represent many of the world's top riders and most skilled horses, who compete over 16 days. Riders competing at WEG go through a rigorous selection process during the 4 years preceding each competition. Each participating country sends teams composed of the very best equestrians in their discipline. Some 57 countries are represented by 800 athletes.
2010 marks the first year the World Equestrian Games have been held outside of Europe. Previous Games were held in Stockholm, Sweden (1990) ; The Hague, Netherlands (1994) ; Rome, Italy (1998) ; Jerez de la Frontera, Spain (2002) and Aachen, Germany (2006)The 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games will be held at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington Kentucky.
